Sticker Shock is a collaborative community effort to prevent underage drinking by the Healthy Brain Campaign, the Council on Alcohol and Drugs, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and local convenience and package stores.
Sticker Shock targets adult purchasers of alcohol in Athens-Clarke County and is specifically intended to reach adults who might purchase alcohol legally and provide it to minors.
Messages (including stickers) are placed in participating stores which warn adults of the legal and health consequences of providing alcohol to minors.
Not only can adults who provide alcohol to minors face up to one year in jail and up to a $1000 fine, but youth who drink under age may damage their developing brains and are far more likely to have problems with alcohol later in life.
“We know from our research that most underage teens and adolescents who drink obtain the alcohol once it has been purchased legally, by those over 21,” said Dawn Meyers, Healthy Brain Campaign Director and Director of School Social Work for the Clarke County School District. “With this in mind, we have planned messages to adult purchasers of alcohol to help to keep Clarke County brains healthy and alcohol free.”
Youth and participating local stores are working together to create a safer, healthier lifestyle by combating the problem of underage drinking. Alcohol has been identified as the number one drug of choice among Georgia youth and one of the easiest substances to obtain. The Sticker Shock Campaign hopes to cause adults to think twice before making it any easier for youth to access alcohol.
Sticker Shock is made possible through funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD). The campaign is sponsored locally by The Council on Alcohol and Drugs (TCAD), the Healthy Brain Campaign, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the Community Prevention Alliance Workgroup (CPAW).
